A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read

Over the past year+ I think I’ve actually been doing pretty well catching up on my friends’ recommendations … but I have yet to get to The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, to Jayati @ It’s Just a Coffee Addicted Bibliophile‘s ongoing disappointment. (It also comes highly recommended by ellias, who is not a personal friend but is one of the very few Booktubers I consistently watch.)

A book that’s been on your TBR forever
and yet you still haven’t picked it up

Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery has been on my TBR since January 2017 — I love the Anne books and my interest in Emily was revived when I watched Russian Doll for a class and the protagonist mentions it was one of her childhood favorites because it’s “darker” than Anne.

Come to think of it, maybe I should start sorting my TBR by date added when trying to pick what to read next?

A book in a series you’ve started
but haven’t gotten round to finishing yet

As I’ve mentioned, I have a whole Goodreads shelf for keeping track of these. But one standout is Paper and Fire, the second book in The Great Library series by Rachel Caine: an alternate history where the Great Library of Alexandria controls books and knowledge. I’ve been planning to go back and reread the first book, Ink and Bone, since it’s been such a long time.

A classic you’ve always liked the sound of
but never actually read

In addition to Emily of New Moon (mentioned above), I’ve always been really interested in The Iliad and The Odyssey. And I guess technically I have read some of each, excerpts and such, but I’m still searching for a solid translation that’ll help me get and stay immersed in a narrative that by now I know pretty well. (Heard great things about Lattimore, but I’m open to other suggestions since I’ve had trouble getting a copy.)

A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read

This list has also been on the decline recently, but The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is one that I still haven’t gotten around to yet. Even as I’ve been dipping my toes into the Adult Romance pool, for some reason I seem to keep forgetting about this one when I decide I’m in the mood to try another.

A book that inspired a film/ tv adaptation that you love
but you just haven’t read it yet

Hm. I used to be an always read the book first kind of person (though I’ve since shifted my position) and I haven’t really kept up with new film and TV releases in a while. The closest answer that came to mind was True Grit by Charles Portis — I don’t know that I loved the movie but I remember liking it relatively well when I watched it for a History in Film class in high school; I tend to do better with Western movies than novels so I don’t know that I ever will read it, to be quite honest.

A book you see all over instagram but haven’t picked up yet

I haven’t been on Bookstagram in a good long while, but I remember seeing a lot of buzz there (and I still see a decent amount of buzz on other platforms) for Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. Considering I enjoyed Lim’s Blood of Stars duology (Spin the Dawn and Unravel the Dusk), I really don’t know how or why I haven’t picked up this one yet; it looks really good.
