The Currently Reading Tag

There’s already a version of this tag up on my blog, but it was actually written by Soph @ Bookwyrming Thoughts as part of the 2019 April Fool’s blog swap! So I figured I’d share my actual answers and we could see how well Soph did.

How many books do you usually read at once?

Typically 2-3 but ideally 1-2; I prefer monotasking and monoreading. I’ve gotten up to maybe 5, which included an audiobook, a buddy read or two, and a book for class. (Honestly, I can’t even imagine doing 7-9 as Soph wrote. 😰)

.

How do you decide when to switch between multiple reads?

As previously stated, I don’t usually have that many simultaneous reads. When I do switch, it’s usually situational or based on a schedule: I listen to audiobooks during my commute or while doing household chores; I read for class the day it’s assigned and reread the night before the quiz; I pick up my buddy read until I’m caught up or I have a bit of a lead for my buddy to catch up on.

In the rare cases that I’m reading multiple ebooks or print books just on my own, I’ll go with whatever I’m in the mood for

.

Do you ever switch bookmarks partway through a book?

As Soph noted, this is a non-issue with my Kindle. (I don’t usually use the bookmark function either, since it’ll automatically reopen to my page.)

My answer as far as print books is also pretty much never. Usually I’ll stick my bookmark between some pages at the end of the book so that it’s close at hand for when I need it, saving me from having to hunt down the closest flat object; I really only switch if I somehow lose the bookmark I’m using.

.

Where do you keep the book(s) you’re currently reading?

Wherever I am, basically. I take my Kindle everywhere, from my bed to my classes to the kitchen, and I do the same with print books β€” unless they’re particularly thicc and heavy, in which case I may leave them on my nightstand or desk, and simultaneously read an ebook that I can bring with me.

.

What time of day do you read the most?

Whenever I get a chance, basically. During meals, between classes/club meetings/other commitments, while brushing my teeth …

.

How long do you typically read in one session?

Can I just copy Soph’s fantastic answer? “When you don’t keep track of time while reading because the book is that amazing and you suddenly realize it’s 4am and you have a morning class.”

(It varies greatly. Until the next thing starts or I realize how late it’s gotten.)

.

Do you read hardcovers with the dust jacket off?

I rarely read hardcovers, full stop. But when I do, I usually leave the jacket on β€” either because the library taped them on, or I own the book and I’m worried about losing/damaging it. Also, I use the flaps as a built-in bookmark if I can. (Is that bad? Please don’t come for me.)

.

What position do you mainly use to read?

There’s really no set position, because I have yet to find that magical position that doesn’t leave some part of my body numb after a few hours. So I might be curled up in my desk chair or sprawled on my stomach in bed or walking down the street.

.

Do you take your current read with you everywhere you go?

Yup. (See above.)

.

How often do you update your Goodreads reading progress?

I update Goodreads every time I finish a book and start the next, or at least every other day. Though I don’t routinely add updates to the book I’m currently reading; it’s much easier to type up a Kindle note or jot it down on a Post-it.

I tag: nobody because I’ve already tagged a bunch of people for this one 😜
but feel free to say I tagged you if you want to participate!

  1. Oh my goodness you read with the dustjacket on and sometimes even use the cover as a bookmark D: This boggles my mind because I get so frustrated with the dustjacket on! Other than that, we have some pretty similar reading habits… sticking in the bookmark further in the book to use later, reading about 2-3, reading whenever we have the chance and however much we can and whatever we’re in the mood for.

    1. it might just be that I don’t read many hardcovers – most of my collection are ebooks, followed by paperbacks – but I’ve heard that a lot of people find the dustjacket annoying!

some of my friends used to make fun of me for sticking the bookmark in the back to keep using it, so I feel validated that you do it too, haha

  2. This is such a fun tag! I also bring my current read with me everywhere I go, unless I can’t fit it in my backpack – even though I rarely manage to get good reading in when I’m out and about. And I’ve definitely used the dust jacket flap as a built-in bookmark if I’m only a few dozen pages in… After that I feel too bad about bending the paper. πŸ™‚

I might have to take advantage of the fact that you tagged no one, and therefore everyone! πŸ˜‰
