It’s been months since I’ve done one of these posts, so I thought I’d take advantage of my relatively-decreased reading pace to catch y’all up on the books currently passing through my life.

Currently Reading

 

I started How to Break Up With Your Phone by Catherine Price last week. It’s technically on pause until February, when I plan to actually start the 30-day plan — since I tend to rely on my phone at the start of a new semester, I won’t be ready until then. But although I’m not making progress in the book, I’ve been thinking about some of the introductory material and my relationship with my smartphone.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck is the January pick for the Old Books, New Readers Goodreads group. Once I got reacquainted with Steinbeck’s writing style, I’ve been finding it an interesting read, really different from Grapes of Wrath or Of Mice and Men. Not a new favorite, but engaging enough.

Since my current reads are more marathons than sprints, I may pick up another book as a “light read” to go with them? (Maybe a reread or poetry.) I prefer not to read more than 1-3 books at the same time, though; I admire anyone who can, but it just doesn’t work for me.

Recently Finished Reading

I had heard so much hype for These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling, and just look at that gorgeous cover. It was one of my more anticipated reads for 2019 … so I was quite disappointed to find that the sapphic rep was pretty good, but otherwise it wasn’t all that memorable.

Poetry is, as most people know, largely a matter of reader’s preference. Maybe it’s a bit weird to say, but for me Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong was kind of both a hit and a miss for me? I appreciated his artful arrangement of words but didn’t totally “get” what he was trying to say with them.

Our Wayward Fate by Gloria Chao was yet another book that didn’t live up to my excitement. Although the Taiwanese-American rep is authentic, I wasn’t totally sold on the romance or the individual characters. (If you liked American Panda, though, I think you’ll find this one enjoyable too.)

May Read Next

Since I’m home and have access to my paperback copy of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, I’ve been contemplating a cozy reread to counterbalance my recent string of literary disappointments. (It’s too early in the year to have accumulated so many 3- and 3.5-star ratings, yet here we are.)

The Sky Is Mine by Amy Beashel is my next-due ARC (releasing in early February). I won’t lie, I may have been mostly drawn to my name-twin or close enough protagonist , though I also really like the cover and I am always super excited for debut authors.

I’ve been doing January Jam Jar with the Devour Your TBR Goodreads group, and a decent number of paper slips remain in my repurposed hot cocoa tin. So there are maybe 10-15 titles that may come up next. We shall see!
