So far this year I’ve read more contemporary than any other genre, though fantasy is a very close second, so that’s the one I’ll go with — and I’m choosing to interpret it as “realistic fiction”: memoir, urban fantasy, and such are still fair game, which I don’t consider cheating since “contemporary” overlaps other labels (romance, thriller, etc.).

A Book That Is An Exception When It Comes To Genres Or Elements You Don’t Typically Like

Often I have trouble getting into action-packed high fantasy, especially when they center on male character(s) trying to get stronger — but Saga of the Forgotten Warrior really won me over with its rich worldbuilding and nuanced cast, particularly in the second book.

I’m sure I’m not alone in having some societally-conditioned bias against romance as a genre, which is a shame because some of them are really great stories. When I do dip my toe into this genre I tend to go for the contemporaries, but from the historical subgroup I did enjoy The Governess Game.

The synopsis of Smoke and Key led me to expect mystery and romance and found family. Those are all present, but creepy horror is the most pervasive element, and unfortunately that’s not really my cup of tea.

Pick A Friend Who Motivates You To Pick Up Books You Might Not Normally Be Interested In – Is There A Book They Convinced You To Give A Try?

Fantastic reviews from Sam @ Fictionally Sam and Soph @ Bookwyrming Thoughts have put so many romance reads on my radar, but most of those are contemporary so I can’t use them for this question. Soph’s been particularly vocal about Three Mages and a Margarita (NA fantasy), which I haven’t yet read but is pretty high up on my TBR!

A Book That Is Out of Your Comfort Zone, But You Would Like to Read

For some reason I don’t generally get on well with thrillers, yet I haven’t given up hope that I’ll find some that hook me. So Shutter Island has remained on my TBR … even though I’ve seen the movie (because my friends apparently wanted more mindfuckery after we watched Inception).

Well, more accurately, I was in the room while the movie was playing; it was freshman year of college and my sleep schedule was a mess, so I was not actually awake for the bulk of it 😅 I certainly don’t remember most of what happens, so this should be a fun time.

A Book/Genre So Outside Of Your Comfort Zone That You’ll Probably Never Give It A Chance

There was a time when part of my brain really wanted to read Interview with the Vampire, but thankfully I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m just not interested in vampire romances, especially when horror is one of the main genres involved. (This is probably the same part of my brain that could not let go of its morbid curiosity about Fifty Shades. Consider that lesson learned the hard way.)
