Since one of my 2019 goals is to catch up on all my ARCs, this seemed like a great time to take stock of the situation and develop a plan. Just for convenience and comprehensiveness, I’m including all the data from this year — including books from before I started this blog, as well as review copies for already-published books.
This is my very first state of the ARC, so it’s more of a where am I at than what’s new this month, but future posts will be more in-depth updates. I’m also super excited to start with next year’s first ARC bingo!
As you can see, of the 68 total ARCs I’ve received this year, I’ve read and reviewed almost half; most of these were from Edelweiss. (I always write my reviews as soon as I finish the book or decide to DNF, so I don’t have any that I’ve read but not reviewed.)
My next focus will be Netgalley, since I’ve got to get that feedback ratio back up. I just made my account last month and went kind of crazy requesting ARCs, so it’s an uphill climb but I’m hanging in there — and I definitely know better than to repeat the experience. I’ve been pretty good about not requesting more until I catch up, but I may return to primarily using Edelweiss, since my much lower approval rate there should help keep me in check 😅
It’s definitely not as bad as it could be, so here’s hoping I’ve gotten ahead of the problem before it buries me under a pile of unread ARCs!
How’s your state of the ARC looking? Have you read any good ones that I should look out for? Let me know!
I’m going to do this too! Looks really good! I have some great recs. I’ll put them in my blog post.

😂😂😂 Edelweiss keeping you in check because of approval – honestly that’s brilliant. Except Edelweiss dislikes me so I CAN’T? 🤷♀️
YOU GOT THIS THOUGH. I BELIEVE IN YOU, SMOL BOOKWYRM.

You will totally catch up! I have a small mountain to climb to catch up on the ARCs I have so just might start State of the ARC and shame myself into catching up.

thanks for the encouragement! I figured it can’t hurt to keep myself accountable haha, it’s probably worth a try 😉

I’m so glad you’re joining State of the ARC! This meme has really helped me stay focused on my ARCs and the commitment I’ve made to them.
I love seeing that you DNF’s 7.4% of your ARCs this year. I don’t feel like people DNF books often enough. What is your trigger which decided for you it’s time to stop reading?

aw thanks! I tend to feel worse DNF-ing ARCs since the point is to review, so actually the percentage is higher for my reads in general — but normally I’ll DNF if I’m bored and/or super confused around 20% of the way through the book or I run into a major issue (eg, a racist/homophobic remark that doesn’t seem like it will be addressed); with an ARC it’s more like 60% unless I’m REALLY bored or pissed off.

I agree about not DNFing ARCs as we have received them (more or less) to provide a review. I try to review all ARCs, even if I DNF them. I want to share WHY I couldn’t finish the book with the author and publisher. Perhaps I can help them learn?
Do you ever write DNF reviews?

I do write DNF reviews, for the same reason you said — even if I couldn’t finish the book, I can at least give some feedback.

I am laughing at how your lower approval rating on Edelweiss is a selling point, that is so deliciously smart! I don’t participate in this meme but I love reading these posts a lot, and I look forward to seeing your progress
